Save Money & Extend Your Pool Season
Solar Pool Heaters cost about $2000-4000 installed. The payback period — the
time it takes for your fuel savings to equal the cost of your solar
heating system — can be as short as 2 to 3 swimming
seasons. After that, your energy savings continue for the warrantied
life of the system— 15 years or more of free heat. Compare
this to a life-time of natural heating costs.
Ottawa Solar Power sells solar pool heating systems manufactured
by Enersol (enersol.com) and Techno-Solis
(techno-solis.com). If you'd like to save on delivery and installation
costs by putting in your own pool heater, the Enersol system would
be the best choice for the "do-it-yourselfer". The larger solar collectors
of the Techno-Solis system require delivery and installation by a
professional. That's where OSP comes in. We've been installing systems
for more than 10 years.
Sizing a solar system for a pool
is relatively simple. The procedure assumes the pool is in the
sun receiving passive solar heat gain. Most of the heat loss from
the pool is by convection from the surface so the system is sized
in terms of the pool area ,not by the volume of water in it. On
a roof facing south, if the pool is covered at night with a solar
blanket to reduce heat loss, use a panel area 50% of the pool surface
area.
The size of your pool will determine the number of solar collectors
you need and that determines the cost of the system.
For a typical (in-ground or above-ground) backyard pool in Ottawa
this could range from $1000 to $3900. Depending
on the size of system and the type of roof on your house, installation
of your pool heater by OSP would cost from $450 to $700. For a
more detailed estimate, see the Solar
Pool Heating Cost page.
