Power Your Remote Property with Reliable Off-Grid Solar
Ottawa’s most experienced off-grid solar team.
Over 25 years of building reliable, stand-alone power systems for remote homes and cottages.
Going off-grid with solar takes proven expertise.
Every off-grid property is unique. Our team handles the full process, from design to installation, to ensure reliable year-round power tailored to your site.
Living Beyond the Grid
Off-grid, or “stand-alone,” solar systems generate and store their own power without relying on the electrical grid. For remote properties where bringing in hydro is difficult or costly, an off-grid system can provide dependable, year-round energy.
We’ve designed and installed hundreds of off-grid systems across Ontario for homes, cottages, farms, and custom projects over the past 25+ years. Our experience means we know what works in real conditions and how to engineer systems that perform reliably in every season.

Live Off-Grid with Confidence
Our custom off-grid solar solutions are designed for your unique needs. From your remote cabin, agricultural property, or fully off-grid home, our expertly engineered systems ensure consistent, reliable energy, anytime, anywhere.
Is Off-Grid Right for You?
Many of our clients opt for off-grid systems to power remote properties where connecting to Hydro lines is costly or impractical. With advancements in solar technology and rising Hydro rates, going off-grid is now a viable, cost-effective option for many.
“Mike at Ottawa Solar Power has been instrumental in keeping our off grid cottage powered for 15 years. This past year, Mike has just completed a major solar upgrade for us. I can’t say enough about his knowledge, quality and dependability of solar power. Trustworthy and highly recommended!

Off-Grid Solar FAQ
-
An off-grid or stand-alone solar system is a power system that operates independently from the electrical grid (often referred to as “Hydro” in Canada). These systems generate electricity using solar panels, store energy in batteries, and convert it to usable AC power for your home.
-
How does an Off-Grid Solar System work?
1. Solar panels collect energy from the sun.
2. The energy is converted into DC electricity and sent to a charge controller.
3. Batteries store the electricity for later use.
4. When power is needed, inverters convert the stored DC electricity into AC power (110 volts, 60 Hz), supplying electricity to your home’s appliances.

If your location lacks access to traditional grid power or the cost of connecting to the grid is too high, an off-grid solar system may be the right solution. However, living off-grid comes with certain considerations:
1. Appliance Limitations – Standard electric water heaters, stoves/ovens, and clothes dryers consume too much power for an off-grid system. These appliances must be propane-powered.
2. Seasonal Challenges – Fall and winter often bring extended cloudy periods. A backup generator is essential, as you may need to rely on it from November to mid-January when sunshine is scarce.
3. Heating Requirements – Heat pumps are not viable due to their high energy consumption. Off-grid homes typically use propane or wood heating.
4. Solar Panel Placement – Roof-mounted panels can become buried in snow during winter. A ground-mounted system ensures year-round efficiency.
-
Off-grid solar is ideal for:
• Cottages, cabins, barns, and remote homes that have never been connected to Hydro.
• Property owners looking to avoid the high cost of installing Hydro poles and connection fees.
• People seeking energy independence and protection from rising electricity costs.
Most of our off-grid clients choose solar because extending Hydro lines to their property is too expensive or not feasible.
-
Most homeowners with existing Hydro connections stay on the grid due to cost considerations. However, as electricity prices rise and solar technology becomes more affordable, more people are considering making the switch.
-
Every off-grid system is custom designed based on:
• Your expected energy consumption.
• The best location for maximum solar exposure.
• Aesthetic considerations to fit your property.
-
Yes, but your system must be properly sized to meet your electricity needs year-round. We design systems based on your energy usage, seasonal sunlight, and battery storage capacity.
-
We perform an extensive load analysis of your home to determine how much power you will be using on a daily basis. Then we Match the load with a proper battery design.
